Change in bowel habit
Some patients notice that for no particular reason, the frequency with which they open their bowels alters. There may also be a change in the consistency or appearance of the motions, which may contain blood. A change in the bowel habit or passing blood or slime from the back passage, that last more than a few days, should be taken seriously and a medical opinion sought.
Conditions that may cause these symptoms include infections, inflammations of the bowel (colitis, Crohn’s disease), benign and malignant tumours.
If referred to a General Surgeon, in addition to a general examination, a rectal examination including telescope examination of the bowel may be performed, with additional specialist x-rays. On occasions the treatment may be via the telescope (endoscopy), but surgery may be required and will be discussed fully when the diagnosis is known. Referral to a Specialist Gastrointestinal Surgeon, or Medical Gastroenterologist, may be required in some cases.
